Teen Wins Audience Award at Texas Bank and Trust Photography Contest | Local News

Texas Bank and Trust recently announced the final photograph to be honored in its 40th anniversary photography contest and exhibit.

‘Wave of Fire’ by 13-year-old McKenzie Davis won the People’s Choice Award for Fine Art 2022. Davis’ artwork was chosen by the public from among 715 photographs that entered this year’s competition.

Visitors to the bank were asked to vote for their personal favorite during a two-week period where the photos were displayed in the bank’s main lobby. A total of 164 photographers, representing 57 communities, submitted photographs depicting life throughout the state of Texas.

Davis snapped the photo of her fire pit while hanging out with her family. Davis had just received his camera for his birthday and was taking pictures outside. She said she thought the flame was cool.

Davis’ mother, Cassie Davis, said her daughter got her love for photography from her grandmother. She started taking photos with her grandmother a year ago and worked on taking landscape and nature photos.

“She fell in love with taking pictures [and] all she wanted for her birthday was a camera,” Davis said.

Davis said they’ve known about the contest forever and that her grandmother had taken pictures over the past few years and they knew it was coming. Davis featured four of her photos that she really liked, but “Wave of Fire” was her favorite.

Davis said she didn’t expect to win. Her mother got a call and at first she thought they wanted her to come get her pictures. When Davis’ mother broke the news to her, she said she was shocked but excited.

The award-winning public choice photograph will be on display in the bank’s main lobby, 300 E Whaley in downtown Longview, until July 29.

All winning photographs will appear in the 2023 Texas Bank and Trust Collector’s Calendar. The calendar will be available at all bank branches in mid-December.
