Meryl Meisler’s photography

Fire Island Pine Historic Preservation Society present 1970s Fire Island Memories: Photography by Meryl Meisler, housed at the Ice Palace Resort, home to the Ice Palace nightclub, a staple of Fire Island since the 1950s and the location of several iconic images on display. Meryl Meisler grew up in the 50s and 60s in North Massapequa, Long Island. Memories Fire Island 1970 will be the first exhibition dedicated to Meryl’s uplifting Fire Island photos and her first solo exhibition on Long Island.

At Girl Scout Camp Edey in Bayport, LI, Meryl’s troop beached overnight. Girl Scouts whispered stories about Fire Island, where naked fairies lived in little houses with cute names like “Shirley Temple.” Meryl looked far out into the ocean, trying to catch a glimpse of fairies, but saw none.

While partying at Studio54, Meryl befriended a trans woman named Alexis, who introduced her to Rita, through whom she met Barnett, a Manhattan beautician with a summer residence in Cherry Grove. Barnett invited Meryl to stay a weekend in his attic room in “The Survivor”. Meryl quickly realized that she had found the fairies naked. Barnett took in Meryl and her friend JudiJupiter at all times, and they did until he sold “The Survivor” in 1979. Luckily, Meryl brought her camera too and captured the sexy and free summers. of post-Stonewall and pre-AIDS spirit on Cherry Grove and Les Pins.

After retiring from a 31-year career as a New York City public school art teacher, Meryl began revealing large amounts of previously unseen work. The Fire Island Pines Historical Society curated the exhibit from their books New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco (2021), Purgatory and Paradise SASSY ’70s Suburbia & The City (2015), and A Tale of Two Cities Disco Era Bushwick (2014). Some images from the exhibition have never been published or seen before.
