Photofairs, Asia’s largest photography fair, will debut in New York next year.
Event organizer Creo has announced that the first New York Photofairs will take place September 8-10, 2023 at the Javits Center, right next to the Armory Show. Organized in partnership with Angus Montgomery Arts, the fair will present works of photography, film and virtual reality, highlighting a hundred international galleries. Exhibitor applications are now open.
“We have great admiration for The Armory Show and its long history,” Creo CEO Scott Gray told Artnet News. “Bringing together the unique offerings of both shows under one roof will be mutually beneficial.” The Javits Center, he said, is “an exhibition center specifically designed to meet the needs of galleries and visitors”.
According to Jeff Rosenheim, curator of photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the city itself is likely to be receptive. “New York’s enthusiasm for photography is almost limitless,” he noted in Creo’s press release. “It will bring new energy to the fall season in New York City.”
Gray founded Creo in 2007 as the World Photography Organization, a company whose roster now includes the Sony World Photography Awards, Sony Future Filmmaker Awards and Photo London. He is currently also CEO of Angus Montgomery Arts, which oversees India Art Fair, Taipei Dangdai and Art Düsseldorf, among other fairs.
“Creo has since grown in scale, continuing its mission to develop meaningful opportunities for creatives and expand the reach of its cultural activities in film and contemporary art,” Gray explained.
In 2014, Creo launched the now famous Photofairs Shanghai. Between 2017 and 2019, the band tried to stage two tours of a San Francisco edition, but gave up after learning that it cost over $1 million to produce.
Photofairs New York will organize exhibitors into four sections. The “galleries” will encompass all exhibitors chosen by Creo’s selection committee, comprised of international galleries, and the fair’s international collectors’ advisory group, which will also cultivate a buying audience for the event. The show’s international partner, Meta Media Group, will expand the show’s global footprint.
Meanwhile, the “Platform” section will host stands from galleries with less than eight years of experience in the sector and artists under 35 years old. “Screen” will feature galleries working in new technologies such as virtual reality and NFTs. “Film” will focus on the moving image as a medium.
Since photography has evolved from a technically specialized skill to a widely adopted medium, Gray said, “I think there is a demand for a new exhibition of photographic works and new technologies, which really reflects current trends in the market and explores how we interact with digital. Culture.” Creo seeks to embrace more experimental practices and pioneering photographers, and to attract seasoned and emerging collectors.
